Hi, I’m Karena!
I’m so grateful you’re here. If we haven’t met yet, I’m a wellness entrepreneur, trainer, best-selling author, and co-founder of Tone It Up, the leading fitness and lifestyle community for women. My mission is to help women all over the world feel empowered, fulfilled, and confident — mentally, physically, and spiritually.
I’m a small town girl from Indiana. As far back as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about health and fitness. Growing up, I watched my mom doing Jane Fonda DVDs, and I created my very first “workout video” as an elementary school project (I never imagined where that would lead!). When I was 12 years old, I ran my first half marathon with my dad, and it’s one of my most cherished memories.
I grew up with a mother who had a mental health condition, and as a result I experienced a lot of childhood trauma. In my teens and early 20s, I went through a dark period of deep sadness, anxiety, and substance abuse. Through rediscovering my love of fitness and beginning my spiritual journey, I began to heal myself. Meditation and movement transformed my life, and I’m honored to share these practices.
I am proud to lead the Tone It Up community with my co-founder and best friend Katrina Scott. Through workouts, nutrition products, and community connection, Tone It Up helps millions of women live their healthiest and happiest lives. Most recently, I created Toned Body, Toned Mind, a holistic program in the Tone It Up App that combines yoga, meditation, and self-care.
It lights me up to speak about wellness, spirituality, entrepreneurship, and women’s empowerment. I had the opportunity to share these messages as a headliner at POPSUGAR Play/Ground Festival and a keynote speaker at the PoWer Up Women’s Conference.
I’m also a passionate advocate for mental wellness, and I serve on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI). I consider myself a lifelong student, and I recently studied under Deepak Chopra at The Chopra Center.
A few more things that make me smile: travel adventures, mid-century modern architecture and design, and hanging with my husband Bobby and our Pomeranians Skunk and Tiki (pom mom here!). You can find us splitting our time between Palm Springs and Austin, Texas.
I've also been writing my memoir as a passion project. It’s the story of growing up with a mentally ill mom and how that affected my world. If by telling my story, I can inspire others to turn their pain into happiness and success and to dream big and act on that dream, then I have done my job. We are all more — brighter and stronger — than we could have ever imagined.
